Fifty Shades of Feminism: Tonight!

“Feminism, after all, is simply the radical notion that women are people.” – Lisa Appignanesi, co-editor of Fifty Shades of Feminism

Marking the publication of Fifty Shades of Feminism by Virago in Smock Alley tonight (6pm) will be one of the editors of the book, Rachel Holmes, as well as contributor Shami Chakrabarti, theatre-maker Louise Lowe and journalist Una Mullally.

The book itself is an interesting read, with over fifty contributions from people such as Jeannette Winterson, and Naomi Alderman, whose essay linking the male domination of the tech world with the sexism of the publishing industry is a particular highlight, it is both nuanced and rich.

The book surveys all kinds of feminists, and approaches to feminism, and as such provides a lively, warm, and eclectic document of where feminism has been, and where it is traveling to; it is about battling those that seek to diminish, through brilliant ideas.

As the great George Carlin said – “Men are from Earth, women are from Earth. Deal with it.” He also said:  “Just when I discovered the meaning of life, they changed it.” I do love George Carlin.
